New UN Treaty Would Protect Ocean Life

Questions remain about how it will be implemented.

Members of the United Nations have agreed on a unified treaty to protect and conserve the globe’s oceans. The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea has been in effect since 1994, but it has been hampered by inconsistencies in the laws. Discussions have been going on intermittently since. A new agreement was recently reached.

A spokesman for the UN Secretary General said the agreement is “a victory for multilateralism and for global efforts to counter the destructing trends facing the ocean health, now and for generations to come.”

The U.S. Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry said that it in an important focus “because we’ve lost half the species on the planet and we’re not heading in a good direction.”

Formal adoption remains among the over 190 nations that have signed onto the pact.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Special Envoy Kerry as he represents the U.S. for climate policy discussions and meetings.
  • For the president and his administration as they consider the UN agreement on ocean preservation.
